The framework that was finalized late Friday night through early Saturday morning for a four-year contract would provide a 43 percent pay increase for adjunct professors and a 33 percent pay increase for graduate workers. The contract would be retroactive to July 2022.

In an email sent out to the university community shortly after the bargaining session ended around midnight, the university’s president, Jonathan Holloway, said graduate students would see their 10-month salaries increase to $40,000 over the course of the contract. The minimum salary for postdoctoral fellows and associates would rise by 27.9 percent, he said.

The framework provides “fair and equitable wages, benefits and work conditions for our faculty as well as our graduate students and part-time lecturers,” Mr. Holloway said.

The plight of adjunct professors and graduate workers was cited again and again on picket lines at Rutgers’s three main campuses in New Brunswick, Camden and Newark. Striking tenured faculty members said the current division of academic labor was morally unjust and so unstable that it threatened the quality of students’ education.

“We are out here for the folks that are part-time lecturers who have to reapply for their jobs every year despite the fact that they are asked to teach over and over again and are needed,” said Nicole Mirra, 41, a tenured professor at the Rutgers Graduate School of Education, as she picketed in New Brunswick on the first day of the strike.
